Gin Crawford, the world’s newest demon huntress, just wants to enjoy a football game, but finds herself hunting a serial killer minion instead. When his victims turn out to be the local football star’s female fans, she must determine if the player has joined forces with the minion, but her efforts lead her deeper into danger. When her mentor, Aidan Smythe, is attacked, Gin resolves to go to any lengths to save him, even if it exposes her most tightly held secret. Minions and demons, however, aren’t the only terrors she faces. Will she realize the greatest danger lies within—before it’s too late?

I glance over my shoulder, into the suite, where mage Aidan Smythe sits on a sofa, his feet propped on the coffee table, surrounded by empty beer bottles and cups. Smythe’s fingers fly across the keyboard of his laptop. Only my mentor would show up to a football game and perform Internet searches for demon activity instead of watching the game.

Mages. Impossible to understand. Impossible to slap out their crazy.

“Guess I need to tell Smythe to put away his laptop before the DJs arrive.”

My twin, T, shakes his head at my mentor. When I first slipped on my demon-killing bracelet—the justitia—I was assigned a guardian mage, my mentor Smythe, whose main job seems to be saving my ass.

Not that my ass has needed saving lately, but when I first started this gig I almost died. A lot. Smythe always swooped in to save the day, ahem, I mean my life. A girl can do with a little life-saving action. Especially when the life saver is six foot five inches of black-haired, blue-eyed eye candy. Yep, he’s pleasing to look at, but so are plenty of other men.

None of whom cook for me, save my life, or listen to me grouch. None but Aidan Smythe, mentor extraordinaire.

His only fault being an unhealthy attachment to his laptop.

Karilyn Bentley’s love of reading stories and preference of sitting in front of a computer at home instead of in a cube, drove her to pen her own works, blending fantasy and romance mixed with a touch of funny.

Her paranormal romance novella, Werewolves in London, placed in the Got Wolf contest and started her writing career as an author of sexy heroes and lush fantasy worlds.

Karilyn lives in Colorado with her own hunky hero, a crazy dog nicknamed The Kraken, a silly puppy, and a handful of colorful saltwater fish.

by Rosemary A. Johns

Firstly, thanks for having me on your site!

What do you do if you’re a music fanatic? Too young to remember the ‘60s (if anyone does remember them). But loving everything before and since because it’s music, yeah?

You write a British Rocker vampire with a photographic memory – and a passion for music, who just happens to have lived 150 years of the best British music ever. ‘My name is Light’ – as he would say. That’s what.

Then what Light calls the ‘permanent soundtrack’ of his life? Becomes yours too.

Because I listen to the music I write into scenes – whilst I write them. And edit them. Double whammy. It’s like I’m there because I see scenes, as if they’re films. I’m just rushing to write them down. And I did say scenes.

I was a playwright (as well as a short story writer) before I wrote my new fantasy series Rebel Vampires.

Rebel Vampires is set in the supernatural world of Blood Life, in a hidden London where vampires are both predator and prey. I may love vampires. But I wanted to write a vampire book for adults. Where they weren’t simply the hunters but also the hunted. And death drives desire.

It’s a secret world of vampires, rebels and romance. In the first standalone book – Blood Dragons – Light is caught between his century old love for a savage Elizabethan Blood Lifer and his forbidden human lover.

Blood Dragons is out now (e-book and paperback). Click here: http://viewbook.at/BloodDragons

In the latest book Blood Shackles Light has been abducted, defanged and enslaved by a secret human Blood Club. Why, how and the conspiracy behind his species’ enslavement? You’ll have to buy the series!

Throughout everything, Light is given hope, set free or helped to love by the ‘permanent soundtrack’ of his life.

Music has that power. Plus, as Light says to Grayse, who’s keeping him captive:

‘Your taste in music? It’s so bland it may as well be white noise. What you need are the greats: Billy Fury and THE FOUR JAYS, Jimi Hendrix and The Sex Pistols.

So I’d uploaded them.

Because your passwords..? They hadn’t been difficult for a bloke like me to memorise from a glance over your shoulder.

In the dark, I put on The Rolling Stones. It was like coming alive. Around me, London took on a psychedelia – a clash of experimental chaos.’

Blood Shackles (Rebel Vampires Volume 2)

So here’s the top 4 Blood Life soundtrack to listen to alongside Blood Shackles:

  1. The Rolling Stones – “In Another Land”
  2. The Beatles – “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”
  3. Amy Winehouse – “Back to Black”
  4. Spiritual – “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen”

And if you really want to have some fun… read Blood Dragons first. Immerse yourself in Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Billy Fury, The Small Faces and the Stones – as Light says ‘the greats’.

Blood Shackles is out now at the promotional price of $0.99. Click here: http://viewbook.at/BloodShackles

Want to read Blood Dragons first? It’s out now. Click here: http://viewbook.at/BloodDragons

Light is a Rocker Blood Lifer with a talent for remembering things. He’s meant to be the predator. It’s been that way since Victorian times. But not now. Not since someone hunted him. Enslaved him. Ripped out his fangs. Who are these ruthless humans? Who’s their violent leader? And who betrayed the secret of the Blood Lifer world?

London, Primrose Hill. Grayse is the commanding but alluring slaver’s daughter. The enemy. She buys Light, like he’s a pair of designer shoes. So why does Light feel so drawn to her? Especially when his family is still in chains. Will he risk everything – even his new love – to save them?

Does a chilling conspiracy lie behind it all? A stunning revelation leads Light to an inconceivable truth. If he can face his worst terrors, he can save his family and his whole species from slavery.

Maybe he can even save himself.

The third book in the series, BLOOD RENEGADES, will be out Spring 2017

‘London’s not yours.’

I stiffened. ‘The Lost have walked these streets as long as you humans,’ I whispered, low and intense, ‘which makes them ours, as much as yours.’

I might as well have clouted you. You drew back, with a shiver. ‘You hunt here – parasitically. But England? The world? It belongs to us. You’re just…’

‘Parasites?’ I offered. You didn’t even have the decency to look away.

‘These are my streets,’ you tapped the sticky table for emphasis, in a boozer, street, postcode you’d never have ventured into, if it hadn’t been for me.

I took a drag of my e-cig. ‘Over hundred and fifty years says different, sweetheart.’

You wore that narked expression, which I’d hoped we’d left behind for the night. ‘My home. Not yours.’

‘Any reason it can’t be both?’

‘On account of you’re…’ You stopped yourself, pushing your Guinness away with a jerky shove. Your shoulders slumped. You finished softly, ‘…not human.’

‘Right. Because I’d missed that.’ I took a mouthful of nuts, munching thoughtfully. You’d withdrawn hermit-crab like, your hair falling in two curtains over your mug. ‘There were humans once, who thought like you, the last time a Blood Lifer had the courage to reveal himself to a First Lifer. It was one of my ancestors. A man of reason, in an age of superstition. He reckoned our two species could live out in the open – side by side – so I was told. These First Lifers? They thought he was the devil.’ You’d raised your nut. I could see your peepers – dark grey now – through the veil of your hair.

‘They burnt him.’

Blood Shackles is just 99 cents during the tour!

Box set contains: The Dark Ones, The 24hourlies, Chased (novella)

Rose felt his muscles flex in graceful movement as he sprinted towards the courtyard that lay just beyond the alley. As soon as they left the narrowness of the walls, he leaped into the air and extended his wings, each bat taking them higher, until she could see the length of her street coming into full view below them. The simargl used the wind currents, leisurely taking her in a semi-circle around her neighborhood, before rising higher, his fur and his feathers shimmering in the unimpeded rays of sunlight.

The wind brushed against her skin as they gained speed; it would have been painful for a human, their less protected skin exposed to the elements like this, however, she welcomed the coolness it brought, knowing she still had the luxury of doing a half-shift at any time, should the strokes of fresh air become too aggressive for the tough, but nonetheless more sensitive human form.

The green landscape of Slovenia lay outstretched below them as the simargl kept a steady course, leaving the concrete circle of Ljubljana in the distance and taking them further southeast.

What The Hell Is Urban Fantasy?

I get asked this question a lot. Especially in my daily life, when I tell people I write books and they ask what I write, I say “urban fantasy” and get blank stares. I have yet to distill down a simple and clear answer that won’t take ages to explain when they inevitably ask “what’s that?” Sometimes I try to point out movies and TV shows that have an urban fantasy vibe, to make it clearer. Of course, they’ve never seen any of them (in case you’re confused as well, here’s a list of TV shows, though I don’t necessarily agree that all of these are urban fantasy).

So what’s urban fantasy?! Well, here’s some key elements:

  • Usually set in a city. This is what makes it ‘urban.’ However, to complicate things further, not ALL urban fantasy has a city setting. Because:
  • A general gritty/modern/dark vibe. If it has this feel, it can be set outside an urban area and still be considered urban fantasy.
  • Paranormal elements. This is the actual one universal rule.
  • Usually has a female protagonist. Especially when it comes to urban fantasy books. However, guess what kids? This is not a hard and fast rule either.
  • Has some romantic elements. Again, not universal, but especially when it comes to books. Urban fantasy is often listed as a subgenre of romance. But does it have to be romantic? Of course not! None of this makes sense!
  • Has some action/high-stakes. This is another element that actually seems to be universal.

Is it any wonder I can’t explain to people what the hell urban fantasy is unless they actually read it? I guess it’s…a paranormal, action-y, gritty sorta romance with no clear perimeters on content?

I just write romance, guys. Romance! Let’s leave it at that.

The Burning City Release Day

Today is the day! The Burning City is now available:

The Burning City – Siren Song #3

When the smoke clears, who will be left standing?

Tattoo artist June Coffin has another, more hidden talent: she’s a Siren who can influence people with the sound of her voice. The only chance she has of saving herself—as well as her kidnapped brother and best friend—is to become a vampire. But joining the ranks of the vengeful vamp, Occam Reed, is the last thing June wants to do.

Occam isn’t the only danger June needs to worry about. Power hungry telepath Robbie Beecher will stop at nothing to gain control over Chicago. He’ll destroy anyone who gets in his way—and June’s lover, Sam, is high on the hit list since his bid for Mayor. With the city and June’s heart being pulled in different directions, it’s only a matter of time before the powder keg explodes…and time isn’t something June has much of left. Hitting A Milestone

With one week left until The Burning City, the third book in my Siren Song series, is released, I thought I would share a little milestone I recently discovered I’d reached.

one-thousandI received my royalty report for the first quarter of 2016, and as it turns out, the first book in the Siren Song series, The Wicked City, sold over a thousand copies as of the end of March! It was released in March 2015, so that means it has sold a thousand copies in its first year. Mind you, this report only went to the end of the first quarter, so I don’t know how many I’ve sold since March. In May, The Wicked City was free and ended up in the top five of several bestseller lists on Amazon, so there’s that as well. Of course, I don’t make money on free copies, but they still contribute to the total sold.

I know that a thousand copies is really small beans in the publishing world. A ‘successful’ novel is somewhere in the neighborhood of 5,000 copies sold and bestsellers are in the tens and even hundreds of thousands. I probably wouldn’t impress anyone important with my 1,000 figure (1,059 to be exact) but darn it, I’m impressed and so are my co-workers and friends. I was hoping even 100 people would bother to buy it and I’ve managed ten times that!

So here’s to a thousand copies, and to the third book coming out in a week. I’m happy with my accomplishments!

By the way, I was at Reading Addiction yesterday with a free, exclusive excerpt for The Burning City. Be sure to go check it out!

Beneath the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas lies another city. A secret city in plain sight, full of warlocks and demons, shape-shifters and golems. A city that feeds off the chance magick that is generated by gamblers and which is ruled by mysterious beings called the Oddsmakers.

It is in this strange underbelly of the occult that Anne Moody runs a cursed pawn shop for the desperate, the curious, and the magickally inclined. Though the job is boring, it keeps her under the radar. None of her customers have any inkling that she is a dragon sorceress with a power that’s been feared throughout history. However dragons are no help when a stone statue ends up in her shop that is more than it appears. The statue is a gargoyle named Vale, who is shrouded in mystery and secrets. When she learns that Vale is possessed, and that the person responsible for cursing him plans to take over Las Vegas with a horde of demons from Hell, Anne realizes it is up to her to defy the Oddsmakers and save the city, and possibly the world.

A shift of the eyes to the left. I followed Orlaton’s line of sight to a riveted metal trunk that sat on the floor at the base of one of the bookshelves. Like a pirate’s chest, it was sealed closed by a large, ancient padlock. The padlock was probably only window dressing. The real locks were magickal, and they would hurt you if you tried to break them, if not outright kill you.

“I’ve made my mistake. I will never make it again,” Orlaton murmured.

His cheeks were white. His shoulders had hunched. As I looked at him, dread crawled up my spine like a spider. There had been horror in his voice. A wretched sort of anguish. Anguish still bound up in fear.

I looked at the chest again. It didn’t look so simple anymore. Now it looked like someone’s nightmare.

“What’s inside it?” I asked, reluctant to hear the answer.

His eyes shimmered behind their lenses. “Do you really want to know?”

Orlaton had taken this somewhere darker than I’d intended this conversation to go. I wanted to back away from the haunted knowledge in his eyes even as a part of me wanted to defend him. Orlaton was no wounded bird, but something in that trunk had hurt him. Badly. I couldn’t begin to imagine how terrible—how wickedly devious—it must have been to have slipped beneath his guard.

I couldn’t begin to imagine what it had done to him before he had managed to stop it.

“I suggest you don’t do what I did,” he warned in a voice that trembled. He aimed a meaningful look at the gargoyle statue. “Some magicks…linger. Some magicks destroy you when you least expect them to.”

“I’ll get help,” I promised him. A name came to mind, one I hadn’t thought of in years.

His mouth thinned into the smile of a ghost. “I’d wish you luck, but it won’t help you.”

Tricia Owens wants you to know that Las Vegas is actually a pretty cool place and you won’t be eaten by a troll there. Probably. A former casino games dealer and cruise ship editor, Tricia has traveled extensively, visiting over 70 countries. She writes full time in several genres including urban fantasy and romance. Her favorite setting is her home town, the city of sin.
