Pandora’s Tacklebox Returns!

Last year, as some of you remember, my theme for the Blogging From A to Z Challenge was Pandora’s Tacklebox: The Worst Romance Novel Ever Written In 26 Days. I showed everyone who showed up for the challenge how NOT to write, through the adventures of manly billionaire Highlander cowboy Hawk MacHardcastle and his mermaid lover Dropsy Velvet.

Many of you got a laugh out of this, and it’s been brought up over and over during my theme reveal for this year. Some of you suggested I should put Pandora’s Tacklebox in e-book format for distribution, and so guess what I went and did?

PANDORA’S TACKLEBOX IS NOW AN E-BOOK! Ahem, that is, a FREE e-book (I wouldn’t try to charge you good people for this nonsense). You can download it in tons of different formats on Smashwords!

Let me teach you how NOT to write a book…

Billionaire Highlander cowboy Hawk MacHardcastle is tired of living the jetset life of champagne, bucking broncos, kilts, fast cars, and burning bundles of cash for warmth. Desperate to find meaning in his life, he retires to his family’s isolated cabin in the wilds of New Jersey, on the shores of majestic Lake Latrine.

There, Hawk plans on self-reflection and pursuing the great love of his life—fishing. However, Hawk’s self-imposed loneliness comes to an end when he makes a most unusual companion and fishing buddy.

Dropsy Velvet was once a young woman living on the shores of Lake Latrine with her settler family. However, a curse turned her into a mermaid and now she lives, sad and alone, in the depths of the lake. She hasn’t had human contact for close to fifty years, thanks to everyone either being terrified of her or thinking they’re drunk when they see her—but Hawk may be the connection to the world she’s been craving. Charmed by her innocent face, sparkling wit, and huge bare breasts, Hawk decides to help her find a way to lift the curse, as she will lift his: the curse of ennui and affluenza. But time is running out, for something sinister wants to flush Latrine away forever…

——-

This book was originally a collection of blog posts that made up my theme for the April 2016 Blogging From A to Z Challenge, which lasts 26 days and covers each letter of the alphabet. My hoped-for goal, gentle readers and writers, is to teach you how not to write a book. From awful dialog to awkward foreshadowing, cartoonish villains and even more cartoonish heroes, useless details, too many details, plot that goes nowhere, and metaphor-laced drivel, there will be something to offend even the most seasoned writer/agent/editor/beta reader/long-suffering friend of an author who thinks they’ve seen it all. Take notes, learn, discuss, and most importantly–laugh.

KATE’S FAVORITE SEXY DRINK RECIPES

Thanks Megan for having me as your guest today.

I’m delighted to stop by and share my latest new release Bottoms Up. It’s a sizzling cocktail themed romance that I hope you and your readers will find toe-curlingly enjoyable.

While I’m here, I’d love to share some of my favorite downright dirty drink recipes. I must confess, just between you and me, it was a total blast to research the sexy drinks Justin serves Lexi and to tell the story of their sensual adventures. Especially as they acted out those concoctions with such naughty little names.

Here’s a little cheeky banter between Lexi and Justin to get you in the mood of Bottoms Up:

Flipping through the pages, she scanned for the perfect drink he could teach her. The French Hooker had gone over so well she wondered what else might be fun. Then she saw it. Sex on the Pool Table. And the Slow Comfortable Screw. Her panties grew damp. Her pussy quivered. She spotted the Bend Me Over. They all sounded so deliciously naughty. How am I ever going to decide?

He appeared, ready and eager, dressed in a nice blue-striped shirt that highlighted his eyes and jeans that made her just want to rip them off. She just stood there for a moment admiring how damn hot he looked.

He wasted no time getting to the point. “So what will it be? Did you pick one?”

“There were a few that intrigued me…”

“A few. Well, I could be up for that.” His amusement rippled into a low laugh. “I thought you might be. Now which one should I choose?”

“Why not all of them?” he asked. “We’ll have plenty of time after dinner.”

Lexi could feel her pulse humming the second he moved closer to her, taking the book from her hand and pulling her to him with one hand, the other still firmly around her waist.

“Sex on the Pool Table? Really, you do surprise me, Lex,” he said with certain admiration.

“I like surprising you. And I will after dinner.” Her newly discovered inner sex goddess was taking the reins. She loved how sexy Justin made her feel. How naughty when he looked at her with that devilish lift of his brow. The same look he’d given her when he’d sunk his finger deep into her pussy and made her knees buckle at the sheer pleasure.

He stared at her, devouring her with his gaze before he pulled her hard against him. “That is, if I can wait that long.”

“You’ll have to. And did you see the other one? I folded the page.” Now she was being downright dirty. And she loved it.

His eyebrows rose when he turned the page. “Bend Me Over.” He read the name of the drink out loud. “I intend to.” His voice sent a ripple of desire from her peaked nipples right to her now moist and needy pussy that wanted him inside her more than anything. On the pool table, on the bar, from behind—whatever he wanted, she wanted. Craved.

“There’s more,” she added with glee.

Turning to the next dog-eared page, he grinned. “Pop My Cherry.” His tone was approving.

“Don’t get too excited,” she bantered back. “I think it might be a little late for that, but we can still pretend if you like.”

A deep groan slipped from his lips. “Not that cherry…”

Her cheeks burned hot as he ran his hand over her bottom, her legs almost buckling at the suggestion.

“You naughty, naughty girl…” He smacked her ass hard.

Gulping, she giggled with wicked delight. “We’ll see about that. Dinner?” she asked, and prompted him to look at his watch. “We wouldn’t want to be late for our first date, would we?”

These are a couple of my favorites from the book!
POP MY CHERRY:

1/2 oz. Cherry Vodka
1/4 oz. Triple Sec
1/4 oz. Orange Juice

Shake ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into glass.

SEX WITH THE BARTENDER:

0.5 oz. Coconut Rum
0.5 oz. Triple Sec
0.5 oz. Lime Juice
1 splash(s) Grenadine Syrup
Fill with Lemonade
Lemon/Lime
1 Splash(s) Irish Cream

Mix rum, triple sec, lime juice, grenadine, and Lemonade. Garnish with lemon and lime, then splash Irish cream down the middle.

*Best served behind the bar!

Thanks so much for having me! Check out the book for some of my other favorites, such as Bend Me Over and Sex on The Pool Table…

A bartender with a penchant for naughty drink recipes is well known for crafting the perfect concoction for his clientele. Justin meets his match when down on her luck Lexi walks into his bar and he whips up a cocktail especially for her.

It’s not just the booze talking when Justin and Lexi explore his list of naughty drink recipes in more detail — after hours. Night after night, Lexi is drawn back to Justin’s bar for another deliciously dirty creation and another night of extreme fantasy when he shows her how to let go of her inhibitions — One tantalizing drink recipe at a time— Seems it’s definitely Bottoms Up for these two!

EXCERPT:

“So what’ll it be?” the bartender asked.

Lexi was instantly dragged back to the present.

“Uh…I don’t know,” she offered, wondering how a drink could possibly dull the emptiness inside her.

He gave a smile and a confident shrug. “Well then, you’re in luck.”

“How’s that?” she asked half-heartedly, not really in the mood for banter but realizing she was in need of a drink but with no clue what drink she wanted. Just something to make her forget the shitty day she’d had. And the even shittier year.

The bartender with the soul-searching eyes and the cute little smile that even Lexi had to admit was a bit of a mood lifter, leaned on the bar so his eyes were level with hers.

“You’re in luck because it so happens my drink picking skills are legendary.”

“Legendary?” She repeated his claim, aware some would consider her response a flirt, but she felt it was more of a challenge. A challenge to see if he could pick something for her that would make her feel…feel…What the hell did she want to feel anyway?

“Legendary,” he repeated.

Okay, he was definitely flirting. Lexi couldn’t help but crack a smile.

“You’re that confident,” she pressed.

“Ten to one I will pick the perfect drink for you.”

“Okay then…give it your best shot,” she said, beginning to enjoy thinking about anything other than her troubles while she stood still holding onto the bar stool, but not yet taking the plunge to hop on the stool and settle in.

Without her uttering another word, the bartender poured one long stream of silken liquor into a cocktail shaker. Its slow path had a mesmerizing affect on her. She watched while he picked up another bottle and poured another brightly colored liquor into the shaker at the same time. He placed the bottles down and gave her a nod. Her pulse quickened when he gripped the shaker. The condensation on the container made her lips water but it was the flex of his muscled forearms that stirred something else in her. Something she thought she’d long forgotten. Desire.

After a few swift gyrations he uncapped the shaker with a flourish. Then slowly filled the chilled martini glass while reaching for another bottle, adding a final squirt of orange amber liquor to the drink. The effect creating a layered concoction the color of the most exquisite sunset with a deep blue layer on the very bottom while the fiery orange layer almost floated on top.

Satisfied with his handy work he slowly slid the cocktail towards her.

“Try this,” he offered.

Parched with anticipation, her mouth was so dry she wanted more than anything to down the divine looking concoction.

He smiled encouragingly.

One quick drink Lexi told herself. All she’d wanted was one drink. Not to hang out with a flirtatious and sexy bartender. All she was looking for was a reprieve from the scorching summer sun. Something to quench her thirst. And numb her despair. A brief respite before getting back to what she needed to do. Clean out the apartment and hand in the keys. And thanks to being laid off that morning, she now added finding a job to her growing ‘to do’ list.

Reaching for the glass, Lexi lifted it up to her lips, her gaze meeting his when her lips touched the rim.

“Bottoms Up,” he said with an undeniably sexy tone.

“Bottoms Up, ” she replied, trying to stifle her grin. And trying her best not notice to that he was still watching her. She tipped the glass and took a long sip. Yum. Sweet at first, then a surprising kick when the liquor layer melted down her throat — coursing past her tonsils and warming a spot right between her breasts. Her eyes teared from the potency of the drink.

“You like it,” he announced with satisfaction.

She nodded, and took another sip, this time the cool frosty layer lingering in her throat, ready for that warm shot of liquor to follow. Intriguing.

“Perfect,” she answered, showing him just how much it hit the spot by downing the rest of it in two more sips.

His eyebrows arched and he flashed a heart-melting smile. That was if she had a heart to melt, she chided herself.

“Go on, hop up, I’ll make you another.” He motioned for her to sit.

What now? Stick to her plan, one drink, pay her bill and be gone back into the heat? She watched him pull a martini glass from a cooler, the clear glass immediately frosting up even with the cool air conditioning keeping the bar bearable compared to the sweltering temperature outside.

She watched as he went about making another drink. Shit, how did this drinking in the afternoon thing work? Sure, she’d hung out in her share of nightclubs, into the wee hours with her friends, but this was different. She checked her watch. Four thirty in the afternoon. Heat of the Tucson day. Temps reaching one hundred ten degrees about now or even hotter. Heat or no heat, the last thing she wanted to do was walk back out that door and face life. The realty was it was easier to sit on the bar stool with this sexy bartender and forget about all her troubles.

That’s the spirit. To hell with reality!

Lexi nodded her approval and unhooked her foot from the barstool rung, settling herself up on the seat. She knew she definitely needed another of whatever it was that warmed her from the inside out and made her bad day begin to seem a little less bad.

He put the finishing touch on the drink and then passed it to her.

“Thank you,” she said and glanced along the bar. A waitress waited impatiently at the end of the counter for their orders.

“I’ll get to those in a sec,” he assured them, but his attention remained on Lexi, expectantly, while she took another delicious sip and then another.

“It’s really very good,” she agreed, lifting the drink in toast. “Bottoms Up,” she added and took another sip. He gave a chuckle that made her blush. “That’s the name of the drink…?” she queried when he seemed to be enjoying a little humor that escaped her.

“Oh, that’s not the name of the drink,” he said, with a slow knowing smile that made her hand tremble as she clutched her glass. ‘Bottoms Up’ is the name of the bar,” he corrected her. Motioning with his head to the large pink neon sign over the bar that had somehow escaped her in the short time she’d been there. ‘Bottoms Up’ was spelled in winding script with a flourish at the end that looked distinctly like the bottom of a sexy ass.

Lexi’s cheeks flamed, feeling silly and embarrassed. She quickly took another sip. The cold rush of drink stung her right between the eyes. Ice cream headache. Over the rim of the glass she caught his sexy grin. Like he was enjoying her discomfort. Mortified, she looked down, placing the empty glass back on the cocktail napkin, noting the “Bottoms Up’ emblem on it with a sassy drawing of a martini glass in the shape of a sexy round derriere.

Cassandra Wales, an independent and dedicated registered nurses is determined not to let her recent breakup to break her spirit. She moved in to her quaint cottage in The White Mountain Region of New Hampshire, and decorating is her top priority. A few clangs and whistles wasn’t about to scare her off. Nothing a little magic or a touch of sage couldn’t handle. She never expected to find an elderly woman, accompanied by her hot and sexy grandson, Jake, at her doorstep with an unusual request.

Jake Connor is an ambitious, up and coming lead singer in a rock band. When his grandmother has a dream about her late husband, and she asks him to drive her over to their first home, he doesn’t question her motives. Instead, he meets the woman of his dreams. How can he expect her to take a back seat while he pursues his big break in the exciting world of rock and roll?

Cassandra can’t resist Jake’s magnetism, yet she has her doubts about a man who has women begging for his attention. Can he be the one she has been waiting for or will their different worlds put a halt to their budding romance?

EXCERPT:

His tight-fitted, short-sleeved shirt lifted, giving her a clear view of his six-pack. He probably had women lined up at his doorstep. It wasn’t like her to gawk at a guy. The array of emotions she was experiencing made her woozy. She was attracted to a total stranger and she enjoyed it. All thoughts of her decorating project took a back seat to her raging hormones. Her focus was supposed to be on her new home, not a hot, sexy guy in a great pair of jeans. She took a deep breath in an attempt to get it together. He inched closer, and she got a whiff of his sensual cologne. Steadying herself, a silly thought popped in her head. She envisioned him kissing her. Wishful thinking on her part, but she’d never admit it. Jake didn’t have to do or say another thing to pique her interest. He’d done that already.

The intensity of his stare sent shivers down her spine. “Look, I know this is sudden, but how’d you like to meet me a week from Friday at Shark’s, on Willow Drive? We’re heading the bill and I’d love for you to hear us jam.”

He reached out to touch her arm. “Say you’ll come. Please? No pressure, but my grandmother is waiting.”

He gave a boyish grin. His sensuous full lips tempted her to imagine a romantic interlude. Her head spun. Never in her life had she found a man so tantalizing. She let out a playful giggle, feeling the butterflies in her stomach grow.

“I’d love to hear you play again.” A real date might be better, but a slow start sounded good for now. The unexpected invitation nearly floored her.

“Can you make it this Friday night? I promise to spend breaks with you.” He kept his eyes on her, making his request hard to resist.

“I think I can make it.” “You think? Try to be there. I’ll sing a song especially for you.” She felt the heat on her face.

“Okay, I’ll do my best to make it. It’s nice of you to invite me. Thanks.” Her heart pounded in her chest. She couldn’t believe she had made a date with a man she met briefly, right in front of her house.

For fifteen minutes each night a portal opens in Tamara’s barn and a horde of ghosts spills into her yard. She and Dex work together to find a way to help Cal and the thousands of spirits stuck in the void to cross over. When she learns she has the ghost touch—the ability to touch the ghosts as if they were corporeal—and she accidentally helps a little boy cross, she believes it might be possible. But not all the spirits play nice and when they learn they can sip energy from her ghost touch, they become greedy putting her life at risk.

Each time Cal has to pull her from the mass of ghosts, her touch restores him more and more until he is at danger of being stuck on earth—forever, which is very enticing to Tamara the better she knows him. Will she and Dex figure out how to help the spirits cross and if they do, will she be able to let Cal go?

EXCERPT:

“Dex!” she shouted again, leaping forward and running toward the door. A stabbing pain of cold sliced through her upper arm when she knocked against the ghost with the shovel in his hand. He stopped to stare at her with a surprised expression on his face. She pushed forward, ignoring the increasing pain as she jostled up against the ghosts.

A knot of ghosts hunkered together where she last saw Dexter. She pushed through them, her warm touch surprising enough to make them jump back. Dex lay crumpled in a quivering ball at the center of the group. Tamara kneeled beside him and clutched his shoulders.

“Dex! Are you okay?” He didn’t respond, just rocked to and fro, mumbling incoherent words. She shouted. “Dex! Can you hear me?”

His gaze finally lifted, a wary look colored with terror.

“Oh my God.” Tamara wrapped her arms around him. His body was ice cold. She pressed as much of herself against him as she could and buried her face in his hair. “I gotcha. You’ll be okay.”

Then she became aware of an ache worming through her muscles and realized hands pawed at her, clutched her, and were trying to pull her away. She raised a furious glare at the eager crowd of ghouls and snarled. “Stop! Leave us alone.”

However, hunger showed in the eyes of those who’d been dead a short enough time to still have them. Actions became more insistent and then combative. The group shoved and swayed until she worried she’d be crushed beneath them when they fell. She kept her arms wrapped around Dex, hoping to keep the spirits off him, but many simply reached through him to get to her. He shuddered violently and had grown quiet.

Each individual touch drained her of warmth and energy, yet they continued to grope at her arms and back, tug on her hair and clothing. She grew weaker and weaker until the edges of her vision dimmed and she could barely feel the boy she was trying to protect.

INTERVIEW WITH LYNN KELLAN

What would we find under your bed?

You’d find quilts under my bed. One quilt was made by my husband’s grandmother. She grew up on a farm and she used the fabric from feedbags to piece together quilts, clothing, and whatever she needed. It’s fascinating to look at the brightly colored fabric she used. Another quilt you’d find under my bed was made by my bridesmaid, who is a doctor. She made the quilt for our wedding gift, and she tied every knot the same way a surgeon ties knots when stitching up a patient after surgery. The third quilt is one I made soon after my wedding. It’s a very simple pattern, but the blocks of red, white, and mauve contain many memories. Piecing together a quilt taught me that in order to complete a complex task, you must break it down into small pieces.

What was the scariest moment of your life?

When I learned I was pregnant! My husband is 6’5” tall, and I had a feeling our baby would be huge. I was right. My daughter ended up being over 10 pounds at birth and required an emergency c-section. After my ob/gyn met my huge husband, she suggested we schedule a c-section for my second daughter. Good thing we did, because she was a big baby, too. I shudder to think of how large a son would’ve been. Probably close to 13 pounds. Eesh!

Do you listen to music while writing? If so what?

It depends. I try not to listen to music because the lyrics distract me. However, when I need to set a mood in a scene, I do turn to music to get me in the right frame of mind. When I do listen to tunes, I stick to instrumental pieces or songs that are sung in Italian. I don’t speak Italian, so Italian lyrics can’t distract me. I favor songs sung by Josh Groban. He sings a surprising amount of lyrics in Italian, and his pieces always have a soulful, yearning feel that I strive to imbue into my writing.

What is something you’d like to accomplish in your writing career next year?

In 2017, I hope to release books 2 and 3 in The Brothers Series. RUN TO HER is the first book in the series, and it focuses on Gabe, the oldest brother in the Antonov family.

Book 2 is TURN TO HER, and focuses on Ivan, who is a brilliant graduate student with a past that threatens to dismantle his future. He can leave those bad memories behind once he graduates, but walking away from campus means he’ll also walk away from his gorgeous neighbor, who is a psychologist – and the one person who is sharp enough to discover his painful secret.

Book 3 is called PROMISED TO HER. This story is about Victor, who is a former Marine struggling to adapt to civilian life. His “normal” life skids off the road when his car is slammed into a ditch. He doesn’t know if the crash was an accident…or attempted murder. Soon afterward, his restaurant burns down. Now he’s maimed, pissed off, and determined to discover the cause of these “accidents.” He agrees to work on a farm to buy himself some time, but finds himself elbow-deep in lust for the pretty woman who owns the farm. If another “accident” hurts her, he’ll never be able to forgive himself.

How long did it take you to write this book?

RUN TO HER took 2 years to write. Initially, it was an erotic contemporary. Sex plays an important role in Gabe and Leigh’s growth, and there was a TON of sex scenes in the first draft. There was also a secondary plot line in the story that included Gabe’s ex-girlfriend and Leigh’s ex-boyfriend. Many of my writer friends suggested that the story would flow better with the “exes,” so I recrafted the book and set aside the secondary plot line. I’m glad I did. The romance between Gabe and Leigh takes center stage, and I got to know them very well through all of my rewrites. I hope you like them, too.

Thanks for the interview, Lynn!

She avoids men like him. He needs a woman like her. One lie changes everything…

Gabriel Antonov is a mechanic who can fix anything, even a woman’s hesitance. His talents have earned him the well-deserved reputation as a player, but when a routine one-night stand goes wrong, he’s haunted by what he’s done. Nothing can free him from those depraved memories, until he meets Leigh Nelson.

Leigh avoids strong, silent types like Gabe, who is stronger and quieter than most guys. The only man she’s focused on is her father, who is suffering from a devastating health crisis. She’ll do anything to help him, even at the cost of ignoring her own well-being, but the stress is getting to her. Gabe’s strength is tough to resist, and his silence might be hiding a crushing secret only she can understand.

He can’t outrun his gut-deep craving for her. Problem is, she’s running from him. When they’re marooned in his lakeside cabin, he might finally catch her…if he can admit why he’s falling apart without her.

EXCERPT:

A fat raindrop splattered on the porch screen. And another. Tiny fragments of water landed on Leigh’s shoulder like little kisses. A shiver trickled across her back, forcing her to step toward the center of the porch to avoid getting wet.

The carefree humor fled from his expression. His gaze dropped to the tips of her toes and slowly rose up her legs, her body, her face. Gabe locked eyes with her, reached out, and opened his hand.

An invitation.

She gazed at his broad palm and dark memories rose, fueled by a violent incident that flashed through her mind whenever a big man got close…but this man was different. Gabe used his considerable strength to protect, not dominate. Months ago, he’d pulled off the Interstate to help her when no one else had. After that, he’d showed up to run with her when no one else would. And a few minutes ago, he’d tamed his powerful Harley so she’d enjoy the ride when no one else seemed to care if she had any fun. Even tiny things like ladybugs received his special brand of kindness.

She had no reason to believe Gabe would willfully hurt her. Even so, her heart tripped at the sight of the thick rope of muscle along his arm.

Get your hands on the first book in the series, Black Mountain Magic, right now for just 99 cents!

White Witch Magic – Kentucky Haints #2

We need peace in the valley, y’all.

City girl and unpracticed witch Lorena Mills never dreamed she’d be living in a small Appalachian town in the backwoods of Kentucky, but here she is. Mated to a handsome, brash, and sometimes aggravating Lycan named Deacon Kelley, she’s slowly becoming a better witch and more of a backwoods kind of gal.

Lorena’s job in the town of Blue Ditch is to study the creatures known as Wolvites—once thought to be feral, mindless beasts, now known to have human forms—in an effort to advance science and magic. However, when Lorena is kidnapped by the nefarious witch Neala, who once tried to destroy Deacon’s family, she discovers she doesn’t know nearly enough about either subject. Neala wants Lorena to cure her Wolvite mate Dafydd of a quick-killing virus that is ravaging their species: except, there is no cure. Lorena has to find one, and fast, or the Wolvites will slaughter Deacon’s family.

Forced to work with the Wolvites, Lorena learns about their culture and gains sympathy for them, thanks to a kinder, gentler, diplomatic Wolvite named Kendrick who would like to see an end to the violence. Lorena would love to facilitate peace between the Wolvites and Lycans, but is such a thing even possible?

If she wants to keep Deacon—and his family, and the entire town of Blue Ditch—safe, she’s going to have to find a way. Good thing her powers may be stronger than she ever imagined…

Witches and Lycans and hillbillies, oh my!

Lorena Mills is a witch, but she’s not very good with potions and incantations. Working for a government agency that puts down dangerous uprisings of supernatural creatures, she does much more paperwork than spell casting. When her less-than-magical job lands her in the small Appalachian town of Blue Ditch, Kentucky, in the shadow of Black Mountain, her life starts to get a whole lot wilder.

In the forests surrounding the town, Wolvites—twisted, bestial creatures who hunt and kill humans—are posing a threat. When handsome, charming, and altogether reckless local Deacon Kelley insists on taking matters into his own hands, Lorena has more than monsters to worry about. He won’t stay out of her way, and he won’t take no for an answer.

Deacon is a Lycan–in modern terms, the non-shifting descendants of werewolves–and he and his family have protected Blue Ditch for generations. But now, something too sinister to be controlled by their efforts alone is stirring, and the Wolvites are far more vicious than they’ve ever been. Will Lorena be able to stop the threat and uncover the deadly secrets surrounding it before it’s too late?

To keep the town, and Deacon, safe, she’ll have to—and she’s really starting to like this town.

Kaitlyn Savoy might’ve been raised human, but she’s fully embraced her shifter side in her role as Guardian. Protecting her species calls to her blood, but unfortunately, so does her new partner. She pretends indifference to his cutting remarks about her heritage and the inconvenient blackouts she experiences after each shift.

Chayton Eagle’s honorable bloodlines include an ancient father and full-blooded Sioux mother. When he joins the West Creek Guardians and meets Kaitlyn, he can’t believe fate chose her to be his mate. But it’s too late. He already swore himself to another female.

When the two Guardians have to partner for a mission, it brings them too close to resist their attraction. Until Chayton discovers the promise he made in the past may kill his future.

EXCERPT:

He pulled away from the house to drive slowly through town. There wasn’t much traffic, but like most shifter colonies, they made their actions count and didn’t waste time running errands.

His smile died. “When we go hunt, we’ll hike into the woods and hide our gear. We shift and search, but we leave town the way we came.”

The shifting thing again? “Ashamed?”

Chayton abruptly pulled to the side of the road. He twisted in his seat to face her, his dark eyes deadly serious. “Any weakness will get exploited here, Kaitlyn. You think I’m a dick, wait until you meet every other shifter in this colony. This isn’t a place touched by modern inclusive thinking. Their motto is still the strong survive and if anyone finds out a Guardian roams their streets to enforce how someone else says to govern them and she can’t shift normally, they will use your shifting defect as an example. Mato wouldn’t allow anything less.”

The Octopus isn’t an urban myth—and its agents are anything but ordinary. The intelligence bureau is so well-hidden most doubt its existence. A handful know its location. And fewer walk the halls in the subterranean compound.

Benjamin Sinclair didn’t ask to be a scientific miracle but every mission has its risks and one perfectly-placed bullet ended his life—for a brief moment in time.

Nicole Anima battles demons every day. Life as a paranormal resources operative gives her tortured mind a rest—and keeps her from contemplating her own death.

When Anima and Sinclair partner on a globe-trotting race to eliminate the threat about to cripple humanity, all hell breaks loose. Leaping from planes, crashing into continents, dealing with voodoo priestesses, and running through jungles with zombies hot on their trail doesn’t leave much time for romance, but this duo somehow manages to sizzle.

Two agents. Telepathic mind paired with regenerated commando. One world—and a mission to save it.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

“He’s no man,” she whispered.

Sinclair and the rest of the zombie operatives would never be acceptable in her eyes. She had no idea how many there were and didn’t intend to ask. One was too many as far as she was concerned. To have any of them called a man was unbearable.

All traces of lightness vanished from the voice coming through the phone.

“No time to split hairs. What he is—or isn’t—isn’t important. What does matter is getting both your asses in here as fast as possible. And, like it or not—and I know just which side of the fence you’re on—you will work with Sinclair.”

“No.” One last stand, just because she could.

“Refusal is not an option. Am I understood, Agent Anima?”

She didn’t have to answer because, in the end, they both knew the truth. Refusal wasn’t an option.

She tapped the screen with her fingertip. She put the cell back into the cupboard and closed the door. The security system engaged the instant the wooden panel shut.

Nicole headed for the bathroom. Time to take a two-minute shower, jump into some clothes and grab a firearm before an escort arrived to deliver her to headquarters. No more, no less.

She’d apply minimal makeup on the plane. If there weren’t a pile of documents demanding her perusal, she’d get some sleep. It would probably be the last hours of peace she’d experience in the foreseeable future.

INTERVIEW WITH STEPHANIE R. SORENSEN

Do you ever wish you were someone else? Who?

As a writer, I spend a great deal of time imagining myself as someone else. Many someone elses! I enjoy getting inside the heads of my characters and imagining their interactions and feelings. One of the main delights in both writing and reading for me is being someone else for a while. For example, I’ve always wanted to go into space, but I’m exceedingly nearsighted and not the most athletic pencil in the box, so that dream goes into the “Highly Unlikely” category. Flying all the way to Mars in such a realistic way was marvelous, thanks to author Andrew Weir through his protagonist in “The Martian,” all without actual risk of death.

However, I’ve never wanted to be someone else permanently. In fact, my very first essay, written in first grade as a sentence completion exercise, consisted of the following: “When I grow up, I want to be me.” I can still remember gravely pondering other options, along with various career paths and identities, and rejecting them all in favor of essential me-ness. I did want to be an elf, but my elders explained that was not an option.

What did you do on your last birthday?

My husband and I drove 500 miles each way to pick up a puppy. She was my birthday present. A little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a ruby and white Blenheim. She is outgoing and energetic and loves demanding attention during writing sessions. She also enjoys hunting butterflies.

What part of the writing process do you dread?

That point about two thirds of the way through the first draft. You are out in the middle of the rushing river of writing with the rope of the core story line held between your teeth, swimming like crazy to reach the opposite shore and the dry land of a first draft. But you are weary, and the finish line is still far away, and the idea that seemed so great when you started is now the stupidest idea a human brain ever invented. All comfort (“You can fix it on the re-write!”) seems hollow and empty and you are possessed by overwhelming urges to caulk the cracks on your unreachable second story window frames or take up the study of Tibetan. It is misery.

My husband is a recording engineer, and he finds that same moment with his rock bands when they come up to track their albums. They lay down rough cuts of each song, which is fun and lively, but then they have to go in and repeat recordings until they have a really strong performance of each song so they can move on to the mix stage. (“Editing” for music.) At some point, they are sick of all their songs, hate their album and just want to be done, but they are not done. He tells them, “You wanted to swim the English Channel, and you trained and prepared and now you are in the water, two thirds of the way across. You cannot give up now. Keep going. France is out there. Now play it again.”

So I guess it is a universal point in the creative process. I just mutter to myself, “France is out there. Keep writing.” I get a lot of laundry and dusting done until I can summon the courage to start up again.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?

I don’t suffer from writer’s block exactly, but I do suffer from a busy life and lots of people who want me to do things with them and for them. I like them, and theoretically want to be a good person who helps others, but I get filled with purple rage when I’ve planned a writing day and something comes up. I’m getting better at defending my time, but I can lose whole days because someone interrupted me or wanted a meeting in the middle of a planned writing session. It’s not really writer’s block, for if I know I have an uninterrupted patch of time ahead of me, the writing usually flows pretty well, but if I know I will be disturbed, I cannot get down to work. I need to solve this so I can use smaller chunks of time to write, but for the moment it’s a real problem for me.

Tell us about your latest release.

“Tōru: Wayfarer Returns” is a story about a young man in 1850s Japan who wants to save his country from encroaching Western powers. It’s got a lot of real Japanese history and culture and figures in it, but it’s an alternate history flavored with hints of steampunk and a sweet romance. Basically revolutionary samurai with dirigibles take on foreign invaders. I love Japan and lived there for several years, so the story is a way of sharing that experience with others, wrapped up in an adventure story. It’s more New Adult or Adult than teen YA. The story and characters are pretty upbeat and earnest, so not a good fit for fans of dark dystopias, horror, erotica or violent action-adventure. Historical fiction and historical fantasy fans interested in Japan enjoy it quite a bit.

Thanks for the interview, Stephanie!

A nation encircled by enemies

A noblewoman with everything to lose

A fisherman with everything to prove and a nation to save.

In Japan of 1852, the peace imposed by the Tokugawa Shoguns has lasted 250 years. Peace has turned to stagnation, however, as commoners grow impoverished and their lords restless. Swords rust. Martial values decay. Foreign barbarians circle the island nation’s closed borders like vultures.

Tōru, a shipwrecked young fisherman rescued by traders and taken to America, defies the Shogun’s ban on returning to Japan, determined to save his homeland from foreign invasion. Can he rouse his countrymen in time? Or will the cruel Shogun carry out his vow to execute all who set foot in Japan after traveling abroad? Armed only with his will, a few books, dirigible plans and dangerous ideas, Tōru must transform the Emperor’s realm before the Black Ships come.

Recognition for “Toru: Wayfarer Returns”

EXCERPT:

“Rather than argue with them, you should invite them to make the first flight with you,” said Takamori. “At first they will agree, since it is their place as the leaders. Everyone is very excited about the dirigibles. Set the time and place for the first flight. Jiro should explain that is not a good time because of the wind or something technical that needs testing first. You argue with Jiro and perhaps even scold him for impertinence in front of the daimyōs.”

“Yes, I am often scolded for impertinence,” said Jiro. “I have a talent for it, you know.”

“Indeed you do,” said Tōru. He saw where Takamori was going. “Then they notice the risks and uncertainties…and they ask me if it is safe. I tell them honestly that we have no idea if it is safe or if it will work, and that we might all crash to a fiery death and therefore perhaps I should test it first myself before we endanger them.”

“And I will be impertinent again and tell you in front of them that you don’t have a clue how to fly one of these dirijibi!” Jiro finished the plan for them. “Which is also true, by the way. I know how to fly one of these, and you don’t.”

“You’ve never flown one either,” protested Tōru.

“I have built one. Almost. Soon. How many have you built?” asked Jiro, with his broad grin.

Tōru opened his mouth and closed it again.

“See? Problem solved,” said Takamori, as he pounded Tōru on the back. “We have a fine dirijibi pilot, the finest dirijibi pilot in all of Japan, our good man Jiro here.”
