Give In To The Feeling by Sarah Zama

Today I’m hosting Sarah Zama and her paranormal historical romance Give In To The Feeling. Sarah is a regular visitor to my blog and we met through the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge, so I’m super excited to have her here today! Take it away, Sarah!

She calls it being true to herself. He calls it betrayal.

Chicago 1924

Two years ago, Susie arrived in America, leaving behind her little village in South China where spirits mingle in the mists of the rice fields and play at being human; where the expectations of a daughter are unimportant and ignored.

After her prospective husband dies, she is taken on by his younger associate, Simon, who gives her the carefree life of the New American Woman; the freedom to dress daringly and do things once only reserved for men–drinking, smoking and dancing with strangers. It’s an exciting life and she considers the loyalty Simon demands of her a small price to pay.

Until she meets Blood.

Blood offers Susie even more. He lets her speak her mind and listen to her heart. He gives her his loyalty and asks nothing in return. Through his eyes, Susie sees the golden cage she’s trapped in.

But Simon will never let her forget what she owes him. Even as Susie tries to deny her attraction to Blood, she understands it takes a lot more than daring looks and an attitude to be a New Woman. And while fighting off the bondage her loyalty to Simon built, she realizes that even here in Chicago, spirits can still trick you into believing they’re men.

EXCERPT:

Susie left Simon’s table and crossed the speakeasy toward the bandstand.

The club was dusky, smoky, chock full with people. She knew most of these people, at least by sight. The smoke and the soft light had become so familiar to her that they now wrapped around her like a warm protection.

She squeezed in between two men standing beside a table with cocktails in hand. One of them winked at her. She smiled back but didn’t stop. The show would start momentarily. Susie found a chair waiting for her by the bandstand and sat, watching the crowd ease off the dance floor as the band finished their number. As always, before the show, her heart beat faster. She liked that sensation. The music embracing her, taking control of her body — it lit a flame inside her every single time.

She watched her fellow dancers take their positions on a line of chairs on the other side of the dance floor, all dressed in yellow and showing off their legs and shoulders. All sporting black bobs adorned with white feathers.

Susie dropped her gaze to her hands as she fanned her fingers. Even her nails were polished red. Red like her lips and her dress. It took her a while, but she had become accustomed to her new look. She actually liked it, now. Her fingers were steady, didn’t tremble like the first time she danced right here in this club. Was it only two years ago?

She looked across the floor for Simon. He sat in the dusk of the far corner, his face lit by the golden glow of the stained-glass lamp on the table, a finger tapping his cocktail glass at the rhythm of the fading music.

He smiled at her when their gazes met. A small smile curled the corners of Susie’s mouth.

She raised her chin and straightened her back. The song died out and the murmur of customers took over.

A brush on her shoulder, and she thought a feather might have fallen from her headband. Its gentle touch breathed down her back, causing her a shiver that wasn’t unpleasant, but when she turned, she saw no stray feathers. Her gaze then raised to the entrance by its own accord.

That’s when she saw him.

A stranger.

Only people familiar to the doorman would enter, or people introduced by a customer, and she had never seen this man before. Lithe and willowy and dressed in a grey suit with a matching fedora, a grey coat draped on his shoulders. A black man with black curly hair reaching past his shoulders — and she was staring at him.

She tore her gaze away and saw his companion, taller, bigger and watchful. He wore a black suit, black fedora, black long coat and when he stopped beside his friend and leaned to speak to him, Susie saw he wore his dark hair in a long braid on his back.

So unusual.

Back in China, all men wore their hair in braids even longer than that, but she had never seen it here in Chicago. Simon didn’t wear it like that.
And this man was not Chinese.

Her gaze moved back to the black stranger in the grey suit. She couldn’t look away. Was he really a stranger? Hadn’t she seen him before?

Don’t stare, that’s so rude.

The music burst alive. Susie started and jumped up, joining the dance a second later.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Sarah Zama was born in Isola della scala (Verona – Italy) where she still lives. She started writing at nine – blame it over her teacher’s effort to turn her students into readers – and in the 1990s she contributed steadily to magazines and independent publishers on both sides of the Atlantic.

After a pause, in early 2010s she went back to writing with a new mindset. The internet allowed her to get in touch with fellow authors around the globe, hone her writing techniques in online workshops and finally find her home in the dieselpunk community.

Since 2010 she’s been working at a trilogy set in Chicago in 1926, historically as accurate as possible but also (as all her stories are) definitely fantasy. She’s currently seeking representation for the first book in the Ghost Trilogy, Ghostly Smell Around.

In 2016, her first book comes out, Give in to the Feeling.

She’s worked for QuiEdit, publisher and bookseller in Verona, for 14 years.

She also maintains a blog, The Old Shelter, where she regularly blogs about the Roaring Twenties and anything dieselpunk.

TYLER YOUNG: YOUR NEW FAVORITE ROCK GOD

How’d you come up with that guy? Is he inspired from someone you know? Your husband? An old flame? I’ve been asked these questions way too many times. Of course it’s natural to be curious about how an author develops the characteristics and personalities of their literary characters. The answer is yes, I’m not sure, possibly, no, and maybe.

When I develop characters for a novel I start out by creating my hero. What makes me weak in the knees? Is it the hunky hero from my favorite television show or the bad boy I never quite got my hands on? The powerful intellectual entrepreneur or the rugged athlete? I imagine how I’d like our first meeting to go. Would he be confident and debonair, a lost soul who needs to be saved, or irresistible with an edgy flair? Once I get the basics nailed down, I add layers of personality traits. This is where I evaluate the things I love as well as the things I’m not so fond of in a person. I tend to mesh the personalities of those close to me as well as those I haven’t seen in years to form my perfect male hero.

Tyler Young is the bassist of the up and coming metal band, Devil’s Garden, who are in L.A. to record their album before a European tour. He’s sexy, in that wild rock star way, with a menagerie of tattoos and long blond hair. Kansas boy at heart, Tyler exudes the home town charm and can find any hidden gem of a diner in the biggest city imaginable. When he’s not shredding the bass, you can find him surfing the west coast with some surfer friends he made along the way.

Tyler lives for the moment and can turn anything into an adventure. You never know what you’re going to get but you know it will be beyond your wildest dreams. His charm and charisma along with his hot rocker looks brings Ali to her knees, unable to resist him. Can you resist the hot rock god?

One night stands.
Career-driven Ali Whitman, never dreamed of having one, until she finds herself waking up next to a handsome tattooed man she knows nothing about. After celebrating her promotion to field reporter at Entertainment Rocks! magazine, she breaks her number one rule – to focus on work without the distraction of the opposite sex.

Rules.
Tyler Young lives by his own set. As bassist for Devil’s Garden, he exudes sexual energy and lives for the moment; no strings attached, no regrets, and no looking back.

When the two are brought face to face during an interview it goes sour, sparking a string of disasters. As their feelings for each other grow, they find themselves living by a new set of rules, but demons from the past haunt their new found love. Is it possible to crawl from the ashes of the aftermath or will it all go down in flames?

Love.
Perfect bliss or complete disaster?

EXCERPT:

The blonde huffs. “Looks like I’ll be handling the introductions.” She holds out her hand. “I’m Jenna Crane, and it seems like you and Tyler already know each other.”

I raise my trembling hand and shake hers. “Yes, I’m Ali Whitman from Entertainment Rocks! magazine… Umm…. I’m here to interview Devil’s Garden.” I let go of her hand and step back. Technically, I know Tyler very well, yet he’s still a complete stranger.

She looks at Tyler and then back at me. “Whatever, come on, the guys are in the practice room.” She heads through the doorway.

I watch her disappear into the hall. What are the chances? Tyler works for Devil’s Garden? He mentioned a recording studio. He’s probably their sound tech or something. Maybe he’ll leave and by some miracle I can pull off this interview.

She peeks her head back in. “Uh, you guys coming?”

Tyler clears his throat and runs a hand through his hair. “Yeah” He looks over at me and flashes a half smile. “Ladies first.” He gestures toward the doorway.

I smile and proceed forward. He can skip the gentleman routine. I mean, hello, nice guys call you the day after they’ve spent the night in your apartment. Not that any of it matters now, I’m a professional, and I’m here to get the story.

The Long and Short Of It

Let me ask you a question: how long is a book?

I’m asking this as a writer. Most readers think of books in terms of pages, but most writers think of books in terms of word count. So, how long is a book? How many words?

Of course, the answer is based on various factors: the genre of the book, if the book is in a series, if so which number, and even who the author is, as some authors are known for the length of their books. On top of that, publishers set their own guidelines for how long they want their books to be. As a romance author, most romances are between 70,000-90,000 words, BUT some romance publishers want works much shorter than that and specify so.

Once you figure out how many words make up a book in the genre you’re writing in, for the publisher you want to be published with, then comes the hard part–you have to write that many words.

I’ve recently seen a big shift in how I make my word count. This is why I never say never, because as I grow and evolve as a writer, I try new things (and sometimes I like them). Here’s my before and after:

(BEFORE) OVER-WRITING

I used to write too much. If I was plotting an 80,000 word book, I’d write 100,000 to 120,000 words. Then, in editing and rewriting, I’d chop, chop, chop until I slimmed it down to that mark. I’ve been doing this for a LONG time, I can’t specifically say how long, but for as long as I can remember. I thought of my work as a sculptor thinks of their work–you heave out a huge block of marble, then you get to work chiseling and cutting until it’s a beautiful work of art. Here are some pros and cons of writing this way:

PROS:

  • You have a lot of material to play with. You start with a big basket of apples and gradually pluck out all the rotten ones, or the ones that are about to go bad. There’s a nice fat body of work you can shape and mold.
  • It’s easier sometimes to get rid of stuff than to try to find something to add.
  • There’s a huge sense of accomplishment that comes with writing this much–and it keeps your writer brain occupied so you don’t spend so much time looking at yourself in the mirror yelling “I’m a hack!”

CONS:

  • Sometimes it’s very hard to cut out stuff you love, even if it’s a really bad apple. It might look shiny and sweet on the outside, but you know, deep inside, it’s black and mushy.
  • It takes longer to over-write.
  • When you write something that’s too long, you might do a lot of rambling and going off plot.

This was the way I’d always written. I never thought I’d change. However, this past year, I’ve seen a shift in my writing style. Now I’m doing this…

(AFTER) UNDER-WRITING

I’ve started hammering out books in a more basic format. I under-write, and then go back and fill things in and fatten up the story. By this, I don’t mean I write 5,000 words when I’m aiming for 70,000, but more like I write 50,000, bringing myself up short in the same amount I used to overshoot. In editing, I flesh out the characters more, expand plot points, and generally decorate things and liven it up. Since this is still new and exciting to me, I enjoy it. In this case, I’m more like an artist painting–I get the contour and colors down first, then go back and add in fine details. The pros and cons of this are:

PROS:

  • You’ve already written the story, so you know what it’s about, what you want to convey, and what the tone is. Adding to that enhances those things.
  • It takes less time to write the first draft.
  • Sometimes having the bones down first makes you a lot more creative when it comes to building the flesh–you can also manipulate the story to go in a different direction if you don’t like what you wrote the first time around.

CONS:

  • Adding things can be more difficult than taking them away. What you have might already be so clean that adding to it just makes it bulky (in this case, there’s a huge market for novellas out there, embrace it).
  • Editing and rewriting isn’t as simple as when you’re plucking bad apples: you have to go find more good apples.
  • It’s much harder to write succinctly than to over-write. You have to start with a clean, simple plot in mind, and not be afraid to move from point to point without filling in all the pomp and circumstance–remind yourself that comes later.

However you write, over, under, or somewhere in the middle, you figure out eventually how to reach your desired word count. The more I write, the more I’m willing to experiment. Funny enough, editing used to be the bane of my existence, but now I love it. Maybe that’s why I’ve started under-writing, because I get to spend more time in the editing phase.

How do you get your words?

LINDA NIGHTINGALE’S INTEREST THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR ERA

Actually, I’ve always been more interested in the English Civil War than the American Civil War. Years ago, I bred Andalusian horses, and my stallion Alegre and I participated in events in Staunton, Virginia (the Battle of Worcester re-enactment) and St. Petersburg, Florida. Since I’m a great fan of Charles II, this interest in the ECW sort of followed.

When I wrote Her General in Gray, not from a burning interest in the Civil War as much as an interesting ghost story in the tradition of the movie The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Needless to say, research was required. Various aspects of the story like the cause of the Civil War, the battles and the attitude of other countries to the ACW drew me into more research and more. For example, I learned that slavery wasn’t the only cause of the conflict. Like most wars, the American Civil War was fought for monetary considerations too, in a word cotton. The South had it; the North did not and the Union’s mills needed it. Surf around a little and you’ll come up with all manner of intriguing facts.

I read about the bloody battles of Antietam and Gettysburg, choosing Antietam as the encounter in which the hero Sib was killed. Since he was murdered by a bullet from the gun of a countryman, he was an unquiet spirit, his body never receiving a proper burial. Now a locally famous ghost, he frightened away several would-be owners of Allen Hall, his family home, before the feisty Yankee lass Amber bought the property.

Meanwhile back to the research: It was interesting that one incident almost brought England into the war on the Confederate side. The Brits had maintained a strict neutrality under Prime Minister Palermo, popular sympathies with both factions passionate but not enough to enter the war until the Trent incident. The Southerners dispatched two commissioners, one to England and one to France. The commissioners reached a neutral port and embarked on a British vessel, the Trent. A Union warship boarded The Trent, taking the commissioners prisoner. Finally, to avert a declaration of war, President Lincoln accepted the demands of the British government and freed the commissioners. How different history would have been different had the British become an ally to the Confederacy!

As I studied on, the Civil War took shape as a people drama. Like all wars, when you come right down to it, the conflict is about the individual dying for a principle(s). I tried to decide which side I’d choose, and I couldn’t. Each had reasons I cared about. I was against slavery, but for the right of secession (of course secession wouldn’t work today), and the southern way of life was graceful and elegant (on top of the heap of humanity).

How do you feel about the ACW? I, for one, am glad I wasn’t there.

Autumn Hartley purchases Allen Hall at a steal, but the northern lass gets far more than a beautiful plantation in the South Carolina Low Country. The house comes complete with its own ghost, a handsome and charming Civil War General—for the Confederacy. The stage is set for another civil conflict.

John Sibley Allen died in battle from a wound in the back, the bullet fired by the turncoat, Beauregard Dudley. The traitor’s reincarnation is Autumn the Interloper’s first dinner guest. Sib bedevils her date and annoys her with fleeting, phantom touches, certain he can frighten her away as he did previous purchasers. As time marches on, her resident ghost becomes more appealing while her suitor, Beau, pales in comparison. Autumn finds her ability to love didn’t perish in the divorce that sent her south seeking a fresh start.

After over a century in the hereafter, Sib discovers he is falling for none other than the feisty Yankee girl, but what future could a modern woman and an old-fashioned ghost possibly hope for?

EXCERPT:

In an age of smart phones and tablets, she stood for a moment contemplating the past. The temptation was almost too much for her, but she’d started to fold the dress back into its resting place when a hand landed on her shoulder.

Sib’s voice was soft and tender. “The dress belonged to my mother. She wore it at a ball before the war. It appears to be in passable condition. Why don’t you try it on? I’ve imagined you so attired.”

“I’m a Northerner, remember? I’m surprised you offer your mother’s gown to me.” She turned, the green frock draped over her arm. “Where have you been anyway?”

“Here. All the time. I was simply playing along with your game of asking for my disappearance.”

She stiffened. “Don’t play games with me. My mother used to do that. It was disturbing and hurtful to a child.”

“You reveal more of yourself every moment, and I’m enjoying getting to know you. Very well, I’ll share something about me. My father—what do you call it today?—cheated on my mother. More than once.. I’d hear her crying at night. Thus, I would have been true to my wife.” Eyes sad, he nodded at the dress. “I’d like to see you in that, Autumn. We are becoming friends. She would have approved. I’ll assist with the buttons.”

“Turn your back. I’ll have to get undressed.” She motioned at him. “I’ve no desire for a ghost to see me in my bra and panties.”

He chuckled, his big grin enticing. “Such modesty. Actually, I was anticipating that view. Anyway, I’ve seen you in your underwear before.”

“You Peeping Tom!” She accused, shaking a fist at him. “Will I have no privacy? Do you follow me to the bathroom, too?”

“No, Ma’am.” He shook his head, his hair moving in soft waves. “I was simply in my bedroom when you changed into your nightgown.”

“It’s not your bedroom. This is my house, and don’t you forget it.” She glared at him.

He snapped a smart military salute. “Yes, commander.”

“Turn around.” She slid her sweatshirt over her head and slithered out of her sweatpants. “You are…such an annoyance.”

“Thank you. I couldn’t be more offended.”

A strange feeling of awe washed over her as she slid the beautiful gown over her head. “Okay. I’m ready for help with the buttons.”

The touch of his fingers filled her with an emotion she’d thought dead. A thrill actually rippled over her. Perhaps, because he was no threat. The General couldn’t break her heart as Chad had done. That dreadful affair seemed as far in the past as the dress of rustling satin. He was the VP at the agency, and their brief association and parting had twisted her feelings into knots.

“You’re tense.” Sib stroked her back. “I sense it isn’t the dress.”

“I’ll tell you later.” She spun, swirling the skirt. “What do you think?”

“I think you are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”

“You’ve got to be kidding.” A very sweet emotion seeped through her.

“Not in the least.” He offered her an old-fashioned bow.

All Reyna Daniels wants is to secure her return home to Minneapolis. The last thing she needs is to find her world completely inundated by the magnetizing, hostile Corbyn Bruschard and his group of male-model friends.

Corbyn’s not ashamed at being everywhere, since it’s his territory, and he’s certainly not going to apologize for trying to keep Reyna safe. Especially when she’s his mate.

With all signs pointing to an old enemy’s return, Reyna’s going to have to suck it up and face her ancient Norse heritage fast. That doesn’t mean she has to accept being mated to an Alpha who threatens all of her hard-earned independence.

EXCERPT:

His silvery eyes roamed her freely now, rather than trying to penetrate into her bones.

“Won’t that leave Serena and Justin alone?”

“No,” he answered, leveling her with a stubborn stare. “You’re not going to win this argument, Reyna. There is no way in hell we’re leaving anything to chance, not with those who matter most to us. Now, get over here.”

Reyna scoffed. As if!

“Please,” he added gently.

It took Reyna about ten seconds to reluctantly scoot across the bench seat, still leaving a good arms length between them, because it appeared he wasn’t going anywhere until she did. If he thought she was done with her side of their little compromising barter, though, he was in for a big surprise! She inhaled sharply, when Corbyn hooked his arm around her waist, lifted her, and set her down across his lap. Her feet faced the passenger door, her back cradled in the crook of his left arm still clutching the steering wheel.

Desire unraveled in her veins, starting in her toes and working all of the way up to the roots of her hair. Every inch of her was once again hyper-aware of every inch of him, and she fought hard to keep her composure intact.

“Do you really think distance keeps you safe, falleg?” he asked softly, brushing her ponytail out from between the back of her head and his shoulder.

Fawk…what? “Did you just call me fugly?” she snapped.

“Not even close,” he replied. “Answer the question, Reyna. I’m onto your evasion tactics.”

Well, aren’t we clever?

REGAN BLACK’S CHARACTERS IN A STRANGER SHE CAN TRUST

Thanks for hosting me today, Megan, and helping me celebrate the release of A Stranger She Can Trust. I’m excited to share a few more details about the lead characters in this story.

These two characters challenged me by expressing several of their own issues and opinions along the way, but ultimately, they became two of my favorite people – I mean, characters. (I can tell the difference between fiction and real life, I just don’t always want to).

Carson Lane is a paramedic with the Philadelphia Fire Department. He is currently recuperating from a dreadful loss – his partner on the ambulance rig was murdered during a call several months ago. She was his best friend as well as his co-worker and though he tried, he couldn’t save her as they had saved so many other people.

Although the experts claim Carson is physically able to return to work, he’s afraid of committing to another partner. He’s not sure he can survive getting attached to someone new and discovering again that he can’t save in a critical moment when they need him most. So Carson has been filling in as a sub on the paramedic teams around the city and spending the balance of his free time working in the kitchen of the Escape Club.

Melissa Baxter is relatively new to Philly. In fact she relocated only a year ago when she landed her dream job as a conservator at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. As the daughter of two acclaimed archeologists, she is a serious antiquities and history buff and on a rising track within her field.

Unfortunately, Melissa doesn’t know who she is or why she’s at the Escape Club when she first meets Carson, her memories locked away due to traumatic amnesia.

One of the most intriguing parts of writing this story was the way these two characters learned to trust themselves and each other. They both have so much to overcome in regards to loss and grief, yet they both recognize something in the other that makes taking a chance on friendship and eventually on love worth the risk.

Live the adventure!
Regan

Outside a busy Philadelphia nightclub, a woman stumbles from her taxi. Beaten and bruised, she is an amnesiac who must rely on a handsome stranger to help her uncover her identity. Carson Lane—a paramedic with his own dark history—can’t help but bring this beautiful, vulnerable woman under his wing. As they begin unraveling who she really is, he realizes falling in love could be the biggest risk of all.

EXCERPT:

“Carson!”

He wheeled around to find Grant Sullivan, owner of the Escape Club, leaning into the kitchen doorway. “Sir?”

“I need a word.” He tipped his head toward his office. “Come on back.”

“Sure thing.” Carson untied the apron and left it on a hook by the kitchen door, then followed Grant down the hall. The man’s stocky build and easygoing outlook belied his quickness and boundless energy. At his boss’s gesture, he eased into one of the two chairs facing the desk. The office was quiet, only the dull throb of the band’s bass carrying through the floors.

“How did things go today?” Grant’s brown eyes were bright with anticipation. “On your PFD shift, I mean.”

“Smooth and normal shift,” Carson replied, hoping his relief at the easy question wasn’t too obvious.

Grant nodded, his thick salt-and-pepper eyebrows dipping low with his frown. “And the knee is holding up?”

“Yes.” Carson forced a smile. “Feeling stronger every day.” It was a small fib. The bullet had passed through his thigh, just above his knee, causing all kinds of damage to muscles and connective tissue along the way. He’d resumed walking three weeks after the surgery, but the pain had leveled out around week eight. Contrary to the physical therapy consensus, the motions never got easier.

“I got a call from Evelyn today. She’d like to get you back on the schedule full-time.”

“She said as much to me,” Carson admitted.

“So, why do you keep hanging around here?”

Stuff I’m Up To Right Now

A few updates in my writing world today. I come to share some happy news and a sale with you!

First of all, I had a novella picked up by Evernight Publishing! I haven’t worked with Evernight before, but dang do they have some lovely covers. Also, they were awesome through the whole process. I originally submitted the work as a short story to a submission call for an upcoming anthology. However, the editor asked me if I would revise the work to make it longer and more detailed and submit it to their Romance on the Go line. I did, and they’ve decided to publish it! It’s called Star-Crossed, it’s a paranormal romance, and it will (tentatively) be released in July. Watch this space for more details!

Black Mountain Magic got a four-star review at Night Owl Reviews! Remember that post I made on Monday about luck? Well, this is a fine example. Night Owl Reviews is a huge and well-respected romance review site. Black Mountain Magic is one of my self-published works, so I’m able to directly access my sales figures. My book getting a highly-visible favorable review on a well-known review site, coupled with the fact I just HAPPENED to have the book on sale for 99 cents at the time of the review (which I didn’t know was coming) translated to a few days of high sales figures on Amazon, enough I almost got into the bestseller category. See how luck works like that? Since then, sales have tapered off, despite the fact I subsequently bought a reduced-price ad spot on their site after the review. It’s a roll of the dice.

So, speaking of that, both Black Mountain Magic and White Witch Magic are on sale for 99 cents right now at all retailers! Get ’em cheap! And remember, if you buy ANY of my books, I would be happy to autograph them for you.

Do you have any good news to share today?

Wicked Ride

“When I knock a woman out, I like to make sure she survives the experience.”

Heat ticked down her spine and uncoiled in her abdomen. Why the hell did everything he say sound sexual? She narrowed her gaze.

“You assaulted a police officer, buddy.”

“Kellach. Kellach Dunne.” He smiled, revealing perfectly white teeth in stunning symmetry. “I didn’t mean ta hurt you, Alexandra, and you know it.”

True. He had been busy shielding her from careening fire when his shoulder had connected with her still aching face. “Detective Monzelle to you. How about you come down to the station with me and answer some questions?” She carefully slid from the bed, her bare feet touching cold concrete.

“No.”

She glanced around the pristine room again, wondering if she could take him down. “This isn’t what I expected,” she mused to herself.

“This is your first time in a bed at Fire?”

She stilled and turned to face him, hiding her vulnerability. “I try not to fuck motorcycle gang members, especially those involved in the local drug trade.”

His grin was slow—dangerous—and amused. “Club. Motorcycle club members. Titans of Fire Motorcycle Club, to be exact.” He stood and leaned against the door, blocking the only exit. “We need ta discuss that allegation before we get to the bedroom.”

MAYA TYLER’S VAMPIRE WORLD

I have been fascinated by vampires for a long time. At times, cast in the role of the hero and others, the villain. Vampires are an enigma, a demonstration in contrasts.

My vampire world is consistently full of contrasts. It is filled with darkness, symbolizing death – cheating death through their undead existence, evading death by keeping to the shadows, evoking death of their human victims. We see the darkness. Then, through their eyes, the world is a brilliant and vibrant place. Everything appears sharper, clearer. Their senses, and instincts, are efficiently honed. They have evolved into superior creatures, intent on fulfilling their basic needs, ruthlessly, with a single-minded goal of survival.

My hero Corgan’s pre-vampire life was also focused on survival. His maker Dee rescued him from desolate conditions and bestowed upon him immortality. He saw how strong and vital Dee was, nothing could touch her, not pain, not fear, not death. He wished to gain what she had, but an undead “life” is what she gave him, a life he couldn’t have possibly imagined or desired. He can live undead forever, but he still longs for his human form.

There is a place, within his world, where he can escape, like a dream, where his consciousness goes when he’s resting. His bite is the key to this world and my heroine Marisa joins him there, experiencing what he experiences, an enactment of his human fantasy.

Vampires live alone or with families, nests. Aside from the seemingly chaotic activities of violence and murder, they also have order. Laws. Rituals. Culture. A history which has developed parallel to human existence for thousands of years. A people cannot survive, advance, without some sort of structure. Vampires can offer their protection to humans by claiming them in a ceremony similar to human marriage. Vampire law dictates adherence to this claim, a vampire cannot harm other’s human. But, as in any society, there are those who defiantly choose to live outside the law. And those who choose to rise above their circumstances.

Other supernaturals also exist in this world. Humans with magical abilities like wizards or shifters. Creatures beyond earthly barriers like angels and demons. These different sects are aware of each other, can identify each other, and, for the most part, avoid each other. Some actively seek and destroy supernaturals, like vampire hunters. Most wish to conceal their presence from humans. Some form alliances, like the one between Corgan and his wizard friend Waldor.

A compilation of contrasts. Darkness and brilliance. Life without a soul. A hidden fantasy world. Order and chaos. Collaboration and conflict. My vampire world.

The best laid plans…

Marisa Clements was never satisfied writing the ‘gossip column’ in the local paper so she quit her job to follow her dream of writing fiction. Floundering in an unforgiving industry, she wrote about vampires, a popular subject she considered fascinating but as real as unicorns, to pay the rent.

Corgan Halton was tired of human misconceptions about vampires. He planned on telling Marisa his story and end his existence. It was no coincidence Corgan selected Marisa to write his story. With the ability to see the future, he knew she would be a major part of it. He knew she would be the one to help him die, but in doing so, she’d be doomed to the same fate. Once they met, their futures would be irrevocably intertwined.

Corgan began caring for Marisa and finally revealed the truth to her. He admitted his quest to atone for his past sins had put her in grave danger from a nest of revenge-seeking vampires. Corgan must claim her for her own protection. But claiming her is not enough, he must ask for help from his wizard friends and his maker in order to destroy his enemy or Marisa will never be safe.

EXCERPT:

He didn’t have a name yet, but he had a face. A dark, mysterious face with a century’s worth of secrets. Secrets he would tell her, only her, if she would listen.

Marisa took a deep, calming breath. “I’m listening.” She closed her eyes, waiting. A cool breeze shifted her hair and her eyes popped open. The old floorboards creaked, and she spun her chair around. “Who’s there?” The candle blew out. “What the—”

Time—and her heartbeat—stood still. Paranoia set in, the consequence of writing too many vampire stories. She must’ve left a window open. Or something. She re-lit the candle and turned her attention back to her laptop, staring at the last words she’d typed.

Corgan Halton.

She didn’t remember typing that.

“Corgan Halton.” She said the name slowly. “I like that.” She’d written a dozen vampire stories and this would be her best name yet. It had an old-worldly feel to it. Like a real name. She’d better look it up to make sure it wasn’t a real name; she didn’t need a lawsuit. Did people sue for name infringement?

“Okay, Corgan Halton. Are you real?” She typed the name into a search engine.
“As real as you are.” The distinctive male voice resonated in the otherwise quiet room.

Marisa froze. She didn’t dare turn around. It was her overactive imagination at play. There was no one there. She hoped. Maybe one of her friends? Is this a joke?

“Not a joke, Marisa.”

Gasping, she stood and spun around toward the sound of his voice.

As he stepped out of the shadows, she took in the man before her. Pale with black, curly hair, dressed in an impeccable suit. Dark and intimidating, he stood in her living room, shrinking the already small space.

Exactly as she’d imagined. She conjured him from her imagination? No… This is not happening.

Fyra is on the run. Permanently. Pursued by fellow underworld demons—and one very angry vampire, she’s running out of options. After failing her last mission of forcing vampire, Bishop, to give the demon world the information they want, Fyra knows she’s as good as dead. Too bad she’s no good at hiding. Everywhere she goes, fires break out. Her combustible personality is more than annoying—it’s going to get her killed. Tracked by the random fires reported on the news, her enemies can easily find her—unless Bishop can find her first.

Bishop Laurent has to free himself of the bond Fyra tricked him into…and do it without exposing his own icy secrets to anyone, especially his team. But after he captures her, he sees past her fiery demeanor. Her knowledge of the underworld would be a huge asset, a perfect reason to keep their bond intact. Only Fyra overhears them and refusing to be a pawn, goes on the run again. Bishop has to find her first, and this time, he must admit his real feelings for her…at least to himself. Can he find her in time to save her life and make their bond last forever? Or will they be killed fighting Hell with fire and ice?

EXCERPT:

Was he in an RV? Glancing around, it was too small to be a camper. His gaze landed on a cot that was dark except for what appeared to be flames at the top.

His eyes focused and his heart stuttered.

No flames, but hair the color of fire spread across a pillow. He shifted forward, but the toe of his boot hit a soft object. Switching his focus, he started. A man’s body lay at his feet. His gaze flew back up to the cot just as ember yellow eyes opened.

His heart slammed once, then kicked up its pace. His demon.

She gasped and sat up. “How did you find me?” Then she peered closer. “You’re not really here.” Sitting back, she chuckled. “Had me going for a bit.”

“You killed a human, demon.” Bishop prided himself that he got a coherent sentence out. The exotic beauty in front of him stole his breath.

Her length was curled into the sleeping space, but she’d be tall compared to most humans. Her glorious hair lit up the entire cabin of…was this a semi?

And those eyes.

A pout curled her fire engine red lips. “Would it have been better that I had sex with him like he wanted. He actually preferred to force me.”

Bishop’s leg kicked the body of its own accord. He sneered at the dead man but turned it on her. His demon deserved the look, not the dead human.

She studied her fingers. “The cabin must’ve aired out, but I guess you’re not really here, so the lack of O-two wouldn’t bother you.” Her hands folded on her lap…on top of deliciously curved thighs. “What are you doing here, Bishop?”

His name, in that husky voice…he gritted his teeth. If he was tangible, he might not react any better than the human had.

His eyes wandered her lush body. Had to know what she looked like after all…research…

“What in the devil’s name are you wearing?”

A flash of vulnerability preceded a petulant expression. She tugged at the neck of her ridiculous sweater. It was two sizes too small with ratty threads and barely fit over her sizable bust.

“It’s not like there were many options, and females in this realm are pathetically small.” She shifted and that only drew attention to the fabric stretched over wide hips, stopping short on her deliciously long legs.
