Naming Names

This post is part of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group blog hop. The first Wednesday of every month is Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. The awesome co-hosts for the June 6 posting of the IWSG are Beverly Stowe McClure, Tyrean Martinson, Tonja Drecker, and Ellen @ The Cynical Sailor!

Welcome to June! I feel like every month I say “I can’t believe it’s ___ already,” and again, I can’t believe it’s June already and summer is actually here (at least, for us in the northern hemisphere). Before we know it, Christmas will be back again, huh? Let’s not rush the snow, though…

This month I’m feeling a little better about things–regular readers know my life has been chaotic lately due to work, but finally things are starting to smooth out a bit. I can focus more on writing and blogging, which has fallen by the wayside. At least–fallen away at a level I’m not comfortable with. I HAVE gotten some writing done and I even have a new book coming out this summer, but I wish I could have done more. I tend to get anxious when I don’t live up to my own ridiculous standards.

And even knowing they’re ridiculous doesn’t make it better for me, unfortunately!

So, this month I’m hoping to get back in my groove so I feel more like myself. Even if I take it easy for a while I’m hoping to be productive and get some real work done. And then maybe one of these days I won’t have to worry about a crazy day job robbing me of my creativity–writing will be my day job!

June 6 question – What’s harder for you to come up with, book titles or character names?

BOTH! I can certainly tell you if the title for a book doesn’t arrive with the idea for it, it’s going to be an uphill battle for me trying to figure out a decent title when I’m finished. I always hope a title will come to me while I’m writing, and sometimes it does, but not always. I’m very happy when the title pops in my head along with the plot. That means less agonizing at the end.

As for character names, sometimes they’re easy, and sometimes I have to scour baby name websites, make lists, and keep my ears open for good-sounding names. Sometimes they just pop in my head along with the character. I’ve also changed the name of characters midway through a story because they didn’t sit well with me.

Names and titles are hard!

How is your June going so far? Off to a good start?

  1. Like you I haven’t been feeling very productive and my job does tend to take over sometimes. But I’m hoping to get my act together and get some writing done this year. I’ve written a lot for a novel but it needs a lot of work and I’ve taken a break to work on short stories.

  2. I’m a little down on myself for how little I accomplished last month as far as writing, but like you, I’m optimistic for June. 🙂 I love naming things, but I have too many options for my current WIP, and none of them are singing to me. Happy IWSG day!

  3. It’s great to hear your life is settling down a little. I feel like mine has gotten a little crazy lately, with not nearly enough time for blogging, but I’m trying to reclaim my time (we’ll see how this works).

I’ve changed titles many times, but the one time I tried to change a character’s name, midstream, I had to change it back. It was either make a new character under the new name or stick with what I had. Do you find changing it in the middle actually works for you? Or do you move forward with some regrets?

    1. Thank you! I hope you find the time as well–life always likes to throw us those curve balls.

It really depends on when I change the name–usually it happens for me within the first few chapters so it isn’t TOO drastic of a decision, but even then sometimes it’s hard to switch. I just know when the name feels wrong, it feels wrong!

  4. Good luck with getting your groove back! Hope June settles down more so you can dedicate more time to your writing.
Hope your upcoming release goes smoothly.

  5. Glad you’re getting more time for writing. Life and jobs do get in the way. I enjoy being able to plan my days now. It’s a luxury I don’t take for granted. I may be too lay back when it comes to names and titles. I was spelling my son’s name wrong for several days before my wife told me what was on his birth certificate… true story.

  6. We always say as soon as October hits, the year is over. Now that we have two family birthdays a month earlier, it’s September that marks the end of the year. =)

I may have struggled with naming once upon a time, but once I got into the symbolism behind names, that issue went away.

  7. Congrats on the upcoming release! Ugh about time flying. I can’t believe almost 1 month of summer vacation is almost over. And Christmas? Yikes. That always comes fast.

  8. I am insanely busy too and struggle when I don’t meet my high standards for life and work. I am eagerly awaiting edits from my editor and keeping myself busy with home projects and dabbling with some rewrites. Happy June to you 🙂

  9. PLEASE don’t mention Christmas! *shiver* I agree entirely that this year is going WAY TOO FAST!! As someone who’s a manager in retail and has to work over 50 hr work weeks in the Christmas season… I don’t even want to think about it yet.
I understand your anxiety about not living up to your ridiculous expectations, I think we all do that. We just need to sit back every now and again and breathe. Tell ourselves that we shouldn’t be so hard on ourself… In saying that, it will never happen, but a girl can dream!! 😂🍻👍

    1. Oh gosh, my first job was working in retail–I do NOT miss the holiday stuff, I feel for you! And yes, I’d love to figure out how to tell myself that and believe it…maybe one day. Thank you!

  10. I can totally relate to the “I can’t believe it’s ___ already.” I say that EVERY month 🙂 Baby name sites is a good idea for character names. The ones I come up with are usually so blah.
