Selfies? Yes, please!

NaBloPoMo_PHOTODuring the month of May I’m doing the NaBloPoMo challenge–blogging every day of the month on the theme of photos.

Today’s prompt: Do you like taking selfies? Why or why not? Photo: You

I love taking selfies! The thing about selfies is, they’ve been around far longer than our modern camera phones. The world’s oldest known selfie dates back to 1839.

He’s fashionable even today! Humans don’t change much, do we?

As long as cameras have existed, folks have been using them to take pictures of themselves:

And hey, back then they didn’t even need to put an Instagram filter on!

I don’t know why we’re obsessed with taking pictures of ourselves. Maybe it’s because cameras, even now, are still amazing things to us. They capture a moment and it lasts (almost) forever! Taking pictures of ourselves preserves memories of who we used to be and particular times in our lives. I think it’s silly to get mad about people putting selfies all over Facebook and Instagram–that’s what those platforms are for, after all.

Yes, I love selfies!

  1. I think you’ve chosen awesome past pics for the post. I tried choosing a favorite between them, but I can’t.
Photos ARE all about freezing a moment in time and be it selfie or group selfie, I think it’s important to take them. I have a huge box of old photos from when I was younger.
My dad was always taking pictures of me, me and my mom, me and my siblings…a lot of those. Only a few of him and me. =o( It was just yesterday when I was looking for a specific photo for my post, that I realized I have TONS of photos with my king. Only a few where I’m actually in front of the camera.
Obviously, THAT’s going to change. I’m also going to start taking more selfies. If I get to my 70s I want to say “look….I was a hottie back in the day.” LOLOLOL

    • Yes! Selfies are wonderful that way. Whether you take them just of yourself or with other people, it’s something to look back on and remember. I hope you get lots of pictures with your dad!

      Thank you for stopping by!

  2. Hi Megan,

Penny the Jack Russell dog and modest internet superstar has kindly allowed me to take over the computer. This mean, instead of my making tongue-in-cheek comments on Farcebook about that alphabet challenge that never ends, I have, instead, looked at this post.

Thanks for letting me know what a “selfie” is. I thought it was some form of self-gratification, if you know what I mean. Have a good weekend.

    Penny’s alleged human,

  3. Ironically, as a photographer, I hate taking selfies. I don’t think I look outstanding enough to feel the need to share with others, or myself. But if others want to, I have no problem at all.
