C is for Cats and Coffee

This post is part of the Blogging from A to Z challenge–blogging every day in the month of April (except Sundays!) with each letter of the alphabet.

Ask a writer what the staples of their profession are. Sure, you need your tools: a laptop/computer, paper, pens, whatever medium you choose to write on/with. You need time and space free from distractions. Some need music. Some like to have their notes and research easily available. A good critique partner is a blessing, someone to read and chop away at your drafts.

A lot of writers also need their caffeine fix and feline friends.

For some reason many writers tend to gravitate toward having cats as pets. Maybe it’s the calm, introspective nature of cats (when they’re not running wildly from room to room for no reason). Or maybe it’s their calming, inspiring purr as they cuddle against you (when they’re not draped over the keyboard blocking it). Cats are constant writing companions who glare at you imperiously, as if asking why you choose to click away on those keys instead of using your hands to pet them. They are fuzzy little muses who wedge themselves into any available space–in your heart, and on your desk.

Likewise, many of us are deeply invested in our morning (and noon, and night) coffee. I admit I’m a caffeine addict. The K-cup brewer is both the greatest miracle and biggest bane of my existence, allowing me to produce cup after cup and never have to drink the same thing twice if I get a nice variety pack. I mean, I have to try out all the flavors, right? Coffee is my writing fuel. Coffee turns me into a productive, creative human being first thing in the morning.

Here is a picture of my own fuzzy muse, plotting a bestseller for me:

  1. You have a real talent for photography. The way you laid out your K-cups (I admit I’d never heard of these before) looks like q lovely quilt. Are you an artist as well as a writer?

  2. I am most definitely fueled by caffeine. And I would love to have a kitty muse if I wasn’t allergic and we didn’t travel so much. I grew up with cats and love them; maybe I’ll have one again some day. Yours is adorable!! πŸ™‚

  3. Kudos to you for taking on this challenge. I thought about it but decided that putting my time and effort into Camp Nano would be a better use of my time…this year. But there’s always the next A to Z challenge!
Although I limit myself to one cup of coffee per day nowadays (the morning routine is always the same: give the kitties their daily wet food, then fill my Eeyore mug with the elixir of life), that doesn’t mean you won’t find me at my computer, writing until 2 or 3 AM. My furballs typically scatter themselves around the room, ensuring that I am doing whatever I’m doing correctly, and occasionally interrupting for skritches as a sort of study break. I do find it difficult to write if I don’t have at least one nearby, but as that’s pretty rare, I don’t really have any excuses not to write!

  4. Have to have my Starbucks Ice Coffee. Cute cat. I don’t have a kitty muse, but a I have a Shitzu who oversees my typing.

  5. I love my cats, but Ruby is more of a hindrance than a help πŸ™‚ She likes to jump on my desk and stomp on my keyboard. Amber is much more restful, but she likes the spot behind me on my chair, so I’m only allowed to perch on the edge. As for caffeine – I used to love it, but I react badly to it these days so it’s decaf only for me 😦

    1. My Francis is much the same–she loves to wedge herself in between me and my laptop. She’s ‘helping!’

That sucks about coffee! 😦 I’m addicted, I think. Maybe I should try tapering off with decaf…

      Thanks for stopping by!

    1. LOL I’m a bit of an addict! I love my cat, even though she just literally horked up a hairball a few minutes ago on my pink carpet. That means she loves me, right?
